    Our planned route

    jeanvisser | 12 February, 2008 15:54

Nothing is cast in stone yet but the broad outline of our trip is as follows:

Map with the route we will be following through Africa

We will leave Cape Town Friday 21 March and return to Pretoria, you just simply cannot go to Cairo and not take a pic of Cape Aghulas. From there it is on to Zimbabwe and Mozambique. We will hit the coast at Ilha de Mocambique in the north, from where we will relax and dive all along the coast up to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

After this we go inland to Rwanda and then round lake Victoria through Uganda into Kenia. From here it's north to Ethiopia and Sudan. We will be entering Egypt from Aswan and then hit the Red Sea as quick as possible, we always wanted to go on a diving trip there but there was just never time or money.

Libya will be a short stint as we have to hire a tour guide which is quite expensive and then it's relaxation in Tunisia before we board the ferry for Italy.

In Europe we will stay with our friend Giacomo in Italy and then take a drive to Luxemburg to visit our friends Egbert and Jua. From there we will head south via France and Spain. Then it's the ferry again to Marocco where we will hit African soil again.

The rest of the long haul back is a work in progress, most of the planning of this leg we will do while in Europe!

    ...... and so it begins!

    jeanvisser | 10 February, 2008 08:08

At the end of March 2008, we are leaving on a 12 month trip through East Africa and Europe - and then back again via the Western side. It will only be us: Jean, Hannelie, Jean Pierre (4 then) and Wilhelm (2).

It started out as a 3 month trip to Moz, Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia - but soon we found our fingers tracing further and further along the map...

.... names such as Kigali, Wasu, Maralal, Lake Turkana, Marzabit, Harar, Awash, Lalibella, suddenly took on a new meaning. Our favourite during this time: while we're there, we might as well.

And by the time we got to Egypt, we found Libya and the ancient Roman ruins, Tunisia and a little dotted line on the map accross the Mediteranean to Italy. While we're there....

How to get home then? Magical Morocco caught our eye and we were on our way! Nouachott, the sand dunes of the Sahara, Timbukto, the voodoo markets of Lomé, the white beaches of Ghana, Nigeria, Brazzaville, Cabinda - all with roads leading back home, eventually.

All these places, all these roads - and most importantly, in the company of the 2 most important people in our lives.

It will not be easy, it will be a life changing experience... who knows!

Don't know how far we will get, don't know where the road will take us, don't know what we will see, the only important thing is: We are going!
